Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)

MBARI is located in Moss Landing, CA where their three research vessels and various remote and autonomous vehicles are based. The site provides ready access to the Monterey Submarine Canyon complex for 220+ staff engaged in deep-sea research. MBARI's mission is to achieve and maintain a position as a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology, and to do so through the development of better instruments, systems, and methods for scientific research in the deep waters of the ocean. MBARI emphasizes the peer relationship between engineers and scientists as a basic principle of its operation. All of the activities of MBARI are characterized by excellence, innovation, and vision. Placement opportunities depend upon the research projects underway.

Research opportunities for STAR Participants

Projects may include remote field work which can be physically demanding, or lab-based research, marine engineering, or data analysis projects. All MBARI projects require attention to detail and appreciation for the processes involved in data collection and analysis. MBARI's current efforts span research themes including; benthic (seafloor) processes, midwater research, upper ocean biogeochemistry, ocean observatories, remotely operated vehicle enhancements, new in situ instrumentation, infrastructure support, and educational outreach. Applicants interested in working with MBARI researchers are expected to provide evidence of their research interests and experience, professional maturity, motivation, and ability to work independently in their application materials. MBARI has had a flourishing internship program for many years. STAR Fellows placed at MBARI will be part of this program and able to engage with others across a wide variety of projects.
