The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratory located outside of Denver, Colorado in the city of Golden. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development (R&D).Their mission and strategy are focused on advancing the U.S. Department of Energy's and our nation's energy goals by supporting critical market objectives to accelerate research from scientific innovations to market-viable alternative energy solutions.
What type of work is done at NREL?
Research and development are focused on understanding renewable resources for energy, to the conversion of these resources to renewable electricity and fuels, and ultimately to the use of renewable electricity and fuels in homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles. The laboratory thereby directly contributes to our nation's goal for finding new renewable ways to power our homes, businesses, and cars. NREL's newest sustainable green building known as the Research Support Facility (RSF) is a showcase for energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies (pictured to the left). The building earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification and features a rooftop photovoltaic system, daylighting, natural ventilation and a next-generation, energy efficient data center
STAR Fellows placed at NREL are able to take advantage of affordable housing opportunites on the Colorado University campus in Boulder or share nearby housing with other Fellows and Interns working at NREL. NREL helps about 60 undergraduates locate housing each summer with a list of local housing options, but each Fellow is responsible for her/his own housing. There is an express bus from Boulder to the NREL campus so a vehicle may not be necessary, but it is recommended if you'd like to explore all of the sights that Colorado has to offer!
